MediaTel Group, the UK’s leading online media intelligence company, celebrates its 25th birthday this month.
Established in 1981 in a small office in London’s the Strand, the company’s main objective was to make media data available quickly and efficiently, which fuelled its early adoption of the internet in 1995.
Speaking about the company’s early days, managing director Derek Jones said: “Just as it seemed impossible to take things any further our technical director Tom Walder told us of this thing called the internet. We took a punt and started moving our MediaTel data product across – even though everyone was using CompuServe at frustratingly low connection speeds at the time – and became the first media B2B user of the web.”
MediaTel Group is now made up of four main components – MediaTel.co.uk, incorporating NewsLine and a variety of information databases; INSIGHT which looks at advertising forecasts and industry executive reports; J-ET, the UK’s only online radio trading system that carries over 80% of all national radio revenue, and Business Solutions, which focuses on web hosting and software creation.
140 different companies now subscribe to MediaTel’s data products – MediaTel.co.uk and MediaTel INSIGHT, and usage of the original MediaTel.co.uk product continues to increase, with over 5,000 users during 2005.
“We are still a small company but we believe we have created a very positive culture internally and externally, of mutual respect and attentive client servicing and hopefully we have contributed to the development of many of those who have worked for us over the years,” said Jones. “Our ex-NewsLine editors and correspondents are in print every week right across the media and marketing industry for instance.
“We have led the way in our niche field over the last 25 years and have plenty of energy and drive to continue to do so. Indeed we are working on at least a couple of projects now which may turn out to be our first firsts of the next 25.”
