People in the west Midlands are taking part in a BBC trial, which will see them receiving local news clips direct to video phones.
Six regions will be given a 10-minute update of news every hour, tailored specifically for the area. The bulletins will aim to replicate the sort of news that is available on the BBC’s network of local radio stations.
The television pilot has worried local newspapers in the area, who have said the service would compete for their readers.
The trial will stop at the end of August and will then be subject to the BBC’s new public value test to decide whether it should be rolled out to 60 areas across the UK.
