BSkyB To Trial Mobile TV Technology

BSkyB To Trial Mobile TV Technology

Mobile TV BSkyB is to run the first European trial of Qualcomm’s MediaFLO technology, which will see 10 channels, including Sky Sports News and Sky News, delivered to mobile devices.

The trial, supported by Arqiva, the broadcast solutions company, will use a vacant UHF TV channel to broadcast the transmission signal to customised mobile devices.

The trial is intended to demonstrate the performance capabilities of MediaFLO technology, allowing BSkyB to evaluate the potential benefits as it continues to explore the options for enhancing further its successful Mobile TV services in the UK.

Stephen Nuttall, BSkyB’s group director of Business Development, said: “We’re committed to offering customers flexible ways to enjoy our content.

“Mobile TV forms an important part of our portfolio of services and we look forward to working with Arqiva to evaluate the potential of MediaFLO.”

As well as partnering with BSkyB for the MediaFLO trial, Arqiva is also working with Microsoft on a trial of mutlimedia mobile broadcasting over DAB and DVB-H standards.
