UBC Media has raised £3 million in order to invest in digital music download technology that allows listeners to buy music from radio stations via a handheld mobile device.
The songs will be available for download from digital radio stations, with reports in the trade press putting the cost of each song at £1.25 (60p more than a song purchased on Apple’s iTunes service).
UBC believes that this service will be one of the most significant innovations undertaken by the radio industry in recent times.
UBC is to begin testing the service on Chrysalis Group’s Heart radio station in London, with digital-radio enabled mobile phones added later this year and a full consumer service expected to be initiated in the next 12 months.
As reported previously on NewsLine, UBC Media has reached agreements with BT Movio, Carphone Warehouse and Chrysalis Radio to enable the trial of the service (see UBC To Launch Music Download Service Before Year End).
