Prime Minister John Major has made it clear that he is rejecting Sir David Calcutt’s appeal for a Press Complaints Tribunal as suggested in his report. Mr Major’s stance was made known at a time when the disclosure of Princess Diana’s collusion with the press was being confirmed by ministers. The PM’s rejection of Sir David’s recommendations before they have even been made public is further confirmation that recent events stand in favour of the press. The Government is stressing that yesterday’s revelations have not affected Mr Major’s judgement in any way.
