The Government is meeting this morning to discuss the publication of Sir David Calcutt’s report on press regulation, with plans to issue the report today – over two weeks earlier than planned. Revelations that have unfolded over the past couple of days have made it necessary for Prime Minister John Major to precipitate the publishing of the document, as he feels it necessary not to distort matters even further.
A spokesperson at the Department of National Heritage confirmed that the report will appear late this afternoon but whether or not there is to be a Government announcement to back it up has still to be decided.
