Guardian.co.uk breaks 25m mark

Man On The Internet Guardian.co.uk has become the first national newspaper website to attract 25 million unique users, according to data released by ABCe.

All of the national newspaper websites audited by ABCe saw an increase in traffic, with four now boasting over 20 million users. Coverage of the US Presidential elections no doubt drove people online in increased numbers.

Yet another record was broken with nearly 26 million people reading Guardian.co.uk over the month. This was up 7% from September and 41% year on year. Telegraph.co.uk briefly took the steam out of the Guardian’s achievements in April and May of this year, but it wasn’t long before it came back out on top.

However, Telegraph.co.uk still remains the second most popular of the audited sites, also increasing its users over October. Hitting the 23 million marks brings the Telegraph’s web offering a YOY increase of 108%. If this momentum continues, it could soon be reclaiming the top spot although it has been slowing of late. Despite the number of users logging onto the site increasing, it was up by just 260 thousand this month.

Mail Online has passed 20 million unique users for the first time, mirroring the all round growth in October. Over the past 12 months the Associated Newspapers site has gained 7.6 million users.

Gaining 150 thousand extra users since September wasn’t enough to stop Times Online dropping down the list. Nearly 20.5 million people logged onto the Times website, giving it a YOY increase of 64%.

Sun Online had a great month, scoring 17 million users for the first time. The amount of people viewing the site jumped by 1.4 million people since September. The real result, as usual, lay in the number of page impression produced over October, at 309 million. Its closest competitor was Guardian.co.uk at 218 million.

While gaining more users over the month, Independent.co.uk didn’t impress as much with the online audience, with only 412 thousand extra people viewing the site.

Mirror Digital Network, which includes such domains as Daily Record and The People, saw little movement with traffic. The website, which first reported results in May of this year, had 5.8 million users.

*ABCe defines Unique User as “The total number of unique combinations of a valid identifier, Sites may use (i)IP+UserAgent, (ii) Cookie and/or (iii) Registration ID.” Note that where USERS are allocated IP addresses dynamically (for example by dial-up Internet Service Providers), this definition may overstate or understate the real number of individual USERS concerned.
