Television Viewing Round-Up – October 2008

People Watching TV Most of the terrestrial channels saw declines in viewing share in October, although Five recorded a slight year on year rise, of 0.1 percentage points.

The largest year on year fall in share came for ITV1, at 1.4 percentage points.


All Viewing

Five was up slightly year on year in October, by 0.1 percentage points to 5.1%. UEFA Cup Football was popular for the channel last month, with the match between Aston Villa and Ajax picking up a peak of over 2.4 million viewers (see Channel Five’s UEFA Cup Proves To Be A Winner).

Channel 4 was down by 0.2 percentage points year on year, leaving it with a 7% share of viewing.

BBC One and BBC Two were down 0.8 and 0.6 percentage points respectively. BBC One now has a 21.2% share of viewing, while BBC Two’s rests at 7.6%.

At the start of the month, Steve Coogan comedy Sunshine grabbed almost four million viewers for BBC One on its first outing (see Sunshine Proves Popular With Almost 4m Viewers).

ITV1 was down by 1.4 percentage points, a relatively large decline which took its share to 19.4%, although its Saturday evening show The X Factor could still be relied on to pull in the viewers (see The X Factor Triumphs With Over 10.4m Viewers).

Other channels were up 2.7 percentage points year on year, to 38.9%.


Digital Viewing

ITV1 was also down by 1.4 percentage points in digital homes, to leave its share at 18.2%.

BBC One was down by 0.3 percentage points to 19.6%, while BBC Two fell 0.4 percentage points to 6.5%.

Channel 4 and Five both recorded slight increases in share in digital homes, of 0.1 and 0.3 percentage points respectively. Channel 4 now has a 6.3% share while Five’s stands at 4.8%.

Other channels were up 1.4 percentage points in digital homes.
