Blinkx Launches New Web-Based Version Of BBTV

Blinkx Blinkx has launched a new web-based version of its on-demand broadband television service BBTV.

The video search engine has developed a browser version of its television offering without any software download, allowing users to browse or interact with online sources related to the program they are watching straight from their browser.

Suranga Chandratillake, CEO and founder of blinkx, said: “Delivering a web-based version of blinkx BBTV was a natural evolution for us.”

He added: “Advances in streaming technology and the pervasiveness of broadband have made software downloads an unnecessary obstacle for audiences. We’re delighted to be able to now offer users our ground-breaking online television product directly through their browser.”

The new service will have the same functionalities as the downloadable version but BBTV hopes the browser will enable users to have a greater level of interaction with online TV.

BBTV currently has 26 million hours of indexed video and audio content, with links to added information such as transcripts, background information, reviews and locations of the programs or films.

Viewers can chose to access the extra information or opt to just watch the video full-screen and in TV quality.

Blinkx said it will be adding a number of additional channels and video content to the web-based BBTV service over the next few months.
