Guardian.co.uk has become the first national newspaper website to break the 20 million unique users* mark.
The figures, released by ABCe, show that the Guardian gained a further 1.7 million users over the month of June.
Naturally it wasn’t such good news for every national as the Daily Mail fell from the top spot to fourth, losing nearly 2.5 million unique users. However, traffic was up an impressive 69% year on year.
This is great news for Guardian.co.uk, which has been shedding unique users over the last few months. In fact, June’s record breaking figure is the first swell in traffic since January of this year. Although the website was only loosing a few thousand people from its audience each month it came at a bad time as both Telegraph.co.uk and Mail Online saw surges in their readers.
Telegraph.co.uk’s rise in popularity continues with a further 1.7 million more people logging on to the site, securing its second place position for another month. Its success in June has been attributed to its strong sports sections throughout Euro 2008. It has been an amazing year for the Telegraph Group’s digital arm as the website has seen the flow of users through the site increase by 179.5% year on year.
Times Online saw a rise of nearly half a million users, bringing June’s figures to 16.4 million users. There has been a 70% increase over the past year but the amount of people logging onto the website seems to have steadied over the past two months.
Sun Online is still the fifth most popular National Newspaper website with 15 million unique users and it’s still producing an amazing amount of page impressions. This month there have been 291 million pages viewed, 16 million up since last month. This is down to the red top’s successful venture into bringing Page3, Dream Team FC and the hugely popular Sun Bingo into its digital domain.
The latest national to be audited by ABCe, Independent.co.uk, is seeing traffic growth but still remains the second lowest on the list, with 7.2 million unique users. With historic data being released by ABCe we can see that although small it has had a 85% rise in users since August last year.
Mirror.co.uk saw an increase of half a million people logging on over June, bringing the total number of people viewing the Trinity Mirror site to 5.5 million. Page Impressions are not released.
*ABCe defines Unique User as “The total number of unique combinations of a valid identifier, Sites may use (i)IP+UserAgent, (ii) Cookie and/or (iii) Registration ID.” Note that where USERS are allocated IP addresses dynamically (for example by dial-up Internet Service Providers), this definition may overstate or understate the real number of individual USERS concerned.
