Around a quarter of US consumers are watching internet TV more than once a week, according to new research.

In-Stat’s new multi-client research study found that 26% of US consumer respondents report viewing internet TV more than once a week, although rather than a substitute for traditional pay TV services, consumers want their over-the-top internet video to compliment their traditional TV offerings.

Keith Nissen, In-Stat analyst, said: “Consumers want the best of both worlds: pay-TV and over-the-top Video.

“Nearly 40% of consumer broadband household respondents want a combination of linear TV and on-demand TV, and nearly three quarters want to acquire all their video content from their pay TV service provider.”

The market research firm also forecasts that there will be 102 million web-enabled devices – including gaming consoles and Blu-Ray players – in the US by 2013, up from 24 million in 2009.

In March, Leichtman Research Group reported that around 25% of all US TV households have a television connected to the internet.

LRG said that overall, just 1% of all US adults watch video from the internet daily, and 5% weekly.

Elsewhere, The Nielsen Company’s latest Three Screen Report revealed that simultaneous use of the internet while watching TV hit three and a half hours a month in the US in the last quarter of 2009 – up 35% year on year.
