TV Overnights: BBC One wins with 1-1 draw

Last night saw the FIFA 2010 World Cup rack up another win for football, with BBC One’s coverage of Italy v Paraguay picking up a peak of 8.4 million viewers – a 32.5% share of the audience.

An average of 6 million viewers stayed with the coverage, on from 7pm to 10pm, working out at a 25.7% share of the total television audience at the time.

The match, in keeping with much of the tournament so far, did not offer up many goals, although it was a slight upset, with  a 1-1 draw the final score.

Elsewhere, the soaps did their usual sterling work for ITV1, with an average of 6.4 million (a 32% share) people watching Emmerdale in its 7pm to 7.30pm slot.

The rural show had a peak of 6.6 million viewers (a 32.1% share).

Following straight on for half an hour from 7.30pm, Coronation Street had an audience average of 7.8 million viewers (a 34.5% share), peaking at 7.9 million (a 34.4% share).
