Peugeot’s Gay Kiss Causes Most Furore

The gay kiss in the Peugeot 406 “Search for the Hero” TV commercial caused it to be the ad which attracted the most coverage in the national press during the first quarter of 1996. The ad generated 19 stories, toppling Wonderbra from the top spot.

Propeller Marketing’s Ad That Make the News survey puts Levi’s “Spaceman” TV ad in second place; this ad’s popularity came from the 16-year old Russian model Kristina Semonovskia and the number one hit from Babylon Zoo.

Joint third were ads from Club 18-30 and the Football Association’s Euro 96 ad aimed at women. Both generated 13 stories, partly because of cheeky straplines like Club 18-30’s “Something deep inside her said she’d come again” and Euro’96’s “How can I lie back and think of England when Venables hasn’t finalised the squad”.

The Independent was top for running stories about ads this quarter, followed by the Daily Telegraph then the Daily Mirror.
