ABC Results Jul-Dec 2004: Haymarket Boosted As Eve Proves Successful

The figures listed in NewsLine’s ABC reports are those reported by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) as at Thursday 17 February 2005. Late submissions and changes may be made after this date, and will thereafter be amended in MediaTel’s Press database. For full notes on how NewsLine’s reports are compiled please see NewsLine.

The latest ABC results for the six months to December 2004 reveal Haymarket’s recently acquired Eve magazine to have been one of the best performing titles at the end of last year, increasing its circulation by a healthy 12.5% year on year.

The title now commands a total circulation of over 160,000 and looks set to flourish following its sale by the BBC earlier this year (see BBC Worldwide Sells Eve Magazine To Haymarket).

IPC’s Woman & Home also performed well, adding 12.6% to its circulation year on year to command a circulation of 332,646 at the end of 2004. IPC saw a mixed performance from its stable of women’s monthlies during the six months to December. While Marie Claire added 6.6% to its circulation year on year, both Essentials and Family Circle suffered declines, shedding 14.3% and 13.5% year on year respectively.

Clearly size does matter, as Marie Claire, having reduced its size at the beginning of the period, saw its circulation increase by more than 23,000 (6.6% year on year) (see IPC Scales Down Marie Claire To Boost Circulation).

Conde Nast’s handbag-sized Glamour continues to dominate the sector, with a 6.5% year on year increase, taking its circulation total to 620,391. The title has, in fact, increased its circulation every period since its launch.

Meanwhile, the National Magazine Company’s Cosmopolitan enjoyed a 3.9% boost to its circulation year on year, pushing its total to a respectable 478,394, its first increase since 2002. The title appointed Sam Baker as editor last year, replacing Lorraine Candy who left to join Hachette Filipacchi’s Elle.

Elsewhere, Emap saw a mixed performance in the women’s monthly sector, with Yours adding a solid 8.7% to its total circulation year on year, while New Woman lost 3.5% of its total in the same period. The titles now command circulations of 438,872 and 280,448 respectively.
