ABC Results Jul-Dec 2006:Glamour Leads Women’s Monthlies As Real Bows Out

Women's Magazines Conde Nast’s handbag sized women’s monthly, Glamour, has retained the top spot in the sector, according to today’s ABC release for July to December 2006.

The title remained fairly static year on year and period on period, and now boasts a circulation of around 588,500, whilst some of its competitors had less to celebrate.

Marie Claire saw a 10% year on year drop in circulation, or almost 37,000 issues in real terms (despite a 1.1% period on period boost) to leave its total at 334,729. The IPC title, which this week launched Marie Claire Mobile (see Marie Claire To Go Mobile), unveiled a redesign from its November 2006 issue to give the publication a more “grown-up” feel (see Marie Claire To Unveil New Look).

IPC Media’s InStyle felt a year on year and period on period fall of more than 7.5%. The title shed almost 15,000 copies year on year from its circulation, which now rests at around 182,000.

The publisher announced at the beginning of this month that it would shortly launch a smaller travel-sized edition of the title, in a bid to tap into the travelling consumer (see In Style Adds New Format), whilst the publication will also gain a new website in April (see IPC Launches New Website In Style).

Essential Publishing’s Real magazine, shed more than 51,500 issues year on year, more than 28% of its total to leave it at 131,525. The title announced it was to close last week after an unsuccessful format change from fortnightly to monthly (see Essential’s Real Magazine Closes).

Emap’s Yours saw a significant year on year decline, down 9% or 37,861 in real terms, whilst IPC’s Woman and Home dropped almost 20,000 (5.9%). The titles now command circulations of 383,577 and 316,034 respectively.

IPC’s Essentials also felt a sharp year on year fall, of almost 46,000 in real terms or 40% of its total, despite a 1.5% increase in its circulation period on period. Its circulation now rests at a little over 70,000.

Easy Living on the other hand, from Conde Nast, pushed its circulation up almost 10% year on year, despite remaining static period on period. The title gained almost 18,000 issues to its total year on year and now boasts a circulation of 200,116.

It was a brighter picture for other titles in the sector as well. Elle rose marginally year on year, by 1,000 copies to leave its circulation at 209,172, whilst Eve grew by almost 8,800 copies (5.3%) to 172,419.

Hachette Filipacchi women’s monthly, Red, saw its total circulation rise, by 4,383 copies to leave its total figure at just over 224,000, whilst Vanity Fair and Vogue recorded similar upturns, reporting a total ABC of 99,344 and 219,026 respectively.

It was Psychologies, however, that impressed for Hachette, recording a 20.2% year on year rise and a 10.9% period on period upturn to leave it with a final figure of 115,398.

Cosmopolitan, on the other hand, felt a decline of almost 6,000 copies, despite a 3% period on period lift. The title’s total now rests at 455,649. New Woman also recorded a downturn, of around 4% or almost 9,000 copies. Its total sits at around 222,000.

The figures listed in NewsLine’s ABC reports are those reported by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) as at Thursday 15 February 2007. Late submissions and changes may be made after this date, and will thereafter be amended in MediaTel’s Press database.
