The Media Initiatives Group (MIG) has been appointed to sell advertising on Taxi Vision, the network of LCD screens due to be installed in London’s black cabs.

The first cabs with the Taxi Vision onboard screens will be launched in London in October and will extend to selected taxis within the 20,000 London licensed taxi fleet.

The system comprises of a 15″ LCD screen which will be situated behind the driver and controlled via an onboard PC. Content can be updated via a wireless transmission allowing advertisers to target passengers with daypart schedules and live updates.

The programme content will consist of a mix of news, entertainment and information with advertising and sponsorship opportunities.

Bob Sterling, Director of Microvision, developers of the system, said: “The Taxivision program will be in a video magazine format, offering interesting editorial information and entertainment for the taxi passenger. This provides advertisers with a true Business to Business advertising opportunity, the audience comprising of a high percentage of desirable ABC1 category.”

MIG, which was awarded the contract to sell advertising on TV screens on London’s buses last month (see Media Initiatives Group Sells Ads On The Buses), won approval for the system from the Public Carriage Office in July after extensive trials.

MIG director, John Scorah, added: “In transport related locations MIG now have exclusive sales contracts for screens on buses, taxis, railway stations platforms and airports. In total contracts cover over 1,500 screens, with a minimum of 5,000 set to be installed by the end of 2002.”
