A new survey published by the Advertising Association today shows that people find advertising helpful, informative and entertaining.
The first results of the new regular polling research to measure attitudes to advertising found that consumers recognise the benefits of advertising.
Around 64% of people agreed that advertising is a good way to find out about new products, while 59% said advertising is often entertaining, according to the survey conducted by Yougov.
Baroness Peta Buscombe, chief executive of the Advertising Association, said: “These results are heartening and encouraging for the advertising industry.
“At a time when business is very concerned about the present economic situation it will be those that stay ahead of competition during hard times who will reap considerable rewards on recovery,” she added.
The majority of responses also welcomed using advertising in the media as a means of reducing prices, with people either wishing to keep the status quo or wanting to see more advertising to bring down costs further.
Only one in seven people feel that the advertising industry should receive more government regulation.
Buscombe added: “We shouldn’t be complacent but, at a time when there are often shrill and uninformed calles for advertising bans and restrictions, it is reassuring that public awareness and confidence in advertising is strong and people are benefiting from the strength of creativity in the sector.”
