Almost One Third Of Global Internet Access Is Broadband

New figures from Point Topic show that as of September this year, over 30% of the world’s internet access lines were broadband, via either DSL, cable modem or other broadband platforms.

The number of worldwide DSL lines hit 53 million by the end of September and is on target to surpass 60 million by the end of the year, according to the report. September’s figure represents a 73% growth over the same month last year.

The Western European and Latin American countries continue to lead DSL growth. The major North American and Asia Pacific operators have also experienced prominent increases, with eight out of initial ‘top ten’ since Q3 last year being from either North America or Asia Pacific.

However, there are a number of countries in which growth appears to be slowing. In Japan for example, DSL subscriptions increased by 8% less than in the previous quarter. South Korea is also experiencing comparatively lower percentage increases than in the second quarter.
