Anne Frank Joke Not Funny

The latest Broadcasting Standards Council report has seen complaints upheld against: The Writing On The Wall, a BBC1 thriller which featured a male hostage being raped by his female captor. The Council felt that the explicit and prolonged nature of the rape scene went beyond acceptable boundaries even for a drama scheduled after the Watershed.
Chris Evans Radio One Breakfast show also had a complaint upheld against him after a listener had complained about an offensive joke referring to Anne Frank. The BBC said they had deeply regretted the offence which took place after Mr Evans read out on air a joke that had been faxed to him by a listener.
Brookside did not have a complaint upheld against it regarding it continued incest storyline. A viewer had complained about an episode which suggested that a brother had slept with his sister on his wedding night. The Complaints Committee, which had previously upheld complaints against the programme, decided that the complaint should not be upheld as the brother is simply seen at his sister’s door.
Eastenders also escaped censure after 41 viewers complained about the gay kiss between Tony and Simon. The Committee felt that the scene involved did not go beyond the acceptable limits for a pre-Watershed drama.
