Another Saturday night triumph for Britain’s Got Talent

Britain's Got Talent Contestant Natalie Okri Saturday night was a talent show bonanza, with Britain’s Got Talent going head to head with the song writing crème de la crème of Europe in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009.

The hour long BGT, on ITV1 from 8.20pm, grabbed an impressive peak of almost 10.3 million viewers – a 42% share of the TV audience – with an average of 9.7 million staying tuned for its duration.

Star of this week’s show was undoubtedly 10-year-old Natalie Okri, who mesmerised the audience with her soulful rendition of Alicia Keys’ hit No One.

Over on BBC One from 8pm to 11.15pm was the mighty Eurovision Song Contest 2009 which performed admirably, picking up a peak of around 9.8 million viewers, or a 52.2% share of the audience, just as the final results came in.

And what a result it was, with Norway’s catchy ditty obliterating the previous record with a massive 387 points. Britain’s entry, sung by Jade Ewen, finished in 5th place with 173 points; the UK’s highest finish since 2002.

Sunday night saw BBC One and ITV1 once again dominate viewing, with BBC One’s detective drama Inspector George Gently gaining a peak of 5.8 million viewers (a 22.8% share), while on ITV1, Martin Clunes: Islands of Britain had a peak of 5.2 million viewers (a 21% share).
