AOL Appoints New Vice President Of Marketing

AOL UK has appointed Sharon Lang as its new vice president of marketing with responsibility for brand and acquisition strategy.
Lang, who was previously director of brand marketing, will continue to report to the chief executive officer and co-managing director of AOL UK, Karen Thomson.
Before joining AOL, Lang was direct marketing director at BBJ, which is AOL UK’s media buying agency. Prior to this she ran her own agency and provided consultancy services for agencies and clients. She has also worked in advertising sales at Acme Media and at WWAV as media manager, specialising in direct response advertising.
According to AOL, the new appointment reflects the increasingly integrated nature of brand and acquisition marketing functions. AOL commented: “It was decided to bring all aspects of marketing under a single leadership role to best position the group to further drive membership growth and adapt to new challenges, such as broadband.”
AOL, which recently reached the two million member milestone, has launched a new “no frills” internet package, offering subscribers high-speed access for £27.99 per month (see Broadband Connections Break The One Million Mark). However, competition in the broadband market is fierce and earlier this week Freeserve launched its own discount broadband service, also at £27.99 a month (see Freeserve Ups Stakes With Broadband Price Cut).
More than one million UK households now have a high-speed broadband internet connection, according to a report published earlier this month by telecommunications regulator Oftel. The figures show that the amount of broadband connections has doubled over the last six months, with the number of new connections now running at over 20,000 per week.
