AOL Extends Broadband Offering With NTL

AOL has secured a deal with NTL, worth £85 million, to use the group’s cable network to carry its broadband service.

The deal will expand AOL broadband’s potential reach to 7.2 million broadband-enabled households on NTL’s network and marks the extension of an existing agreement.

According to AOL, the company will have the largest potential customer base of any UK online service provider. AOL now hopes to increase its market share to leverage a leadership position in the competitive broadband market.

UK internet service providers have been scrambling to increase their influence, using a range of initiatives and partnerships. For instance, BT has teamed up with Sky to offer discounts for broadband services (see BT Teams Up With Sky For Cut Price Broadband Promo).

Paul Rusby, Director Wholesale Internet Services at NTL Business, commented: “NTL Business has established its leadership in the wholesale Internet solutions market by adopting a partnership approach with leading providers such as Virgin.net and Tesco. We believe that consumer choice is vital in driving the rollout of broadband, and our partners are increasingly recognising the opportunities offered by our world-class broadband network. We look forward to continuing to work closely with AOL to deliver a high-quality service to its members.”
