AOP To Work With IAB To Grow Online Advertising

The UK Association Of Online Publishers has agreed to work with the Interactive Advertising Bureau to accelerate the growth of the online advertising market, which is expected to top £300 million for the first time this year.
The partnership will see the two organisations work on a number of initiatives to boost the interactive commercial market including audience measurement, trade marketing of online, advertising standards and promoting advertising effectiveness.
All AOP members will enjoy free affiliate membership of the IAB and will join several of the IAB’s key task forces. The AOP chairman will also join the IAB leadership council in a demonstration of the commitment the two bodies have to working together.
Commenting on the initiative, Bill Murray, AOP chairman and managing director of Haymarket Motoring, said: “The IAB’s primary objective of increasing the percentage of online ad spend in the UK is one that AOP members are wholeheartedly behind. Advertising is an important element in the publishing mix, and we are keen to work closely with the IAB in this area.”
He continued: “AOP has areas of focus and interest in revenue streams other than advertising, such as paid-for content, partnerships, ecommerce, syndication’s, and marketing of content through alternative channels that are not a priority for the IAB and we will continue to push our agenda and work with other bodies on these.”
Danny Meadows-Klue, chief executive of the IAB, added: “To achieve progress we can see a way forward that accelerates the online advertising industry by combining resources under an IAB umbrella, and by the IAB streamlining its position so as not to duplicate AOP’s activities in those areas that remain.”
The online advertising industry will be celebrating this Christmas with the latest figures showing that adspend topped £151 million in the first half of this year to give the sector a record market share of 2%.
Research published by the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that online advertising reached record levels in the first half of 2003. The growth means the IAB has hit its target for a 2% share of the market nine months early and confirms that the internet advertising market is now twice the size of cinema and half the size of radio (see Figures Show Online Advertising Boom In 2003).
