Barb Panel Plus heads into prototype phase as it adds two datasets

UK TV joint industry currency Barb has commissioned two prototypes and two new datasets for Barb Panel Plus.

Barb Panel Plus replaces Dovetail Fusion and seeks to incorporate return-path data as well as first-party server data.

In May, Barb issued an invitation to tender for Barb Panel Plus, covering three core elements.

The first is the design of a data-fusion methodology that brings together panel data, return-path data, first-party server data and broadcaster VOD (BVOD) census data.

Secondly, the development of software to process and deliver that data.

Thirdly, the need for TV viewing data, such as return-path data and first-party server data, to fuse with and enhance panel data.

For that final component, Barb has commissioned two new sources of TV viewing data: return-path data from Sky set-top boxes in 900,000 UK homes, sourced by TVBeat; and return-path data from connected TV sets with HbbTV software in 26m homes, sourced by TVA.

At the same time, covering the first two components, Barb has commissioned two prototypes: one from Kantar and another from RSMB and Sopra Steria.

The prototypes are expected to leverage the new sources of data together with Barb’s existing BVOD census data and panel data.

Barb will confirm the next phase of development in Q4.

Caroline Baxter, Barb’s chief operating officer, said: “By integrating further new sources of big data, Barb Panel Plus will enhance our audience measurement by improving data consistency, reducing zero-rated spots and facilitating insight into business outcomes for our clients.”
