Battle Of The Soaps
ITV’s Coronation Street won last night’s battle of the soaps taking a 59% share of adult viewing between 8.00-8.15pm, when it was pitched against Eastenders. However, the Street did show the effects of being scheduled directly against Eastenders. It began its hour long special with an audience share of 70.5% for the quarter-hour 7.30-7.45, this dipped to 59% at 8.00pm when Eastenders came on air and took a 29% share. The Street fell further in its last quarter of an hour to 52.5% while Eastenders rose to 32.8%.
Channel 4’s Brookside appears to have been the major casualty achieving an adult TVR of just 1 and a share of 2.8% in its first quarter hour. The Monday edition, which usually achieves a TVR of 7, is to be moved to Tuesdays at 8.30 from May 3rd. Channel 4 has said the re-scheduling is a direct result of the BBC adding a Monday edition of Eastenders and that the 8.30 slot on a Tuesday has been chosen so as not to clash with ITV’s Tuesday episode of the Bill.
