BBC Aims To Launch 24 Hour News Service
The BBC intends to set up a 24-hour television news service in Britain, John Birt, director general of the BBC has said in an interview with The Guardian. Following the White Paper’s theme that the BBC should become an “international multi-media enterprise”, Birt said that launching a 24-hour television news service was a logical step, and it would be a rival to Sky News. It is not known whether the service would be delivered by cable, satellite or one of the first channels using new digital technology. If the BBC does introduce digital services, the same technology could be used to transmit BBC1 and BBC2, giving a high-quality enhanced picture.
