BBC Programme Strategy

BBC Programme Strategy

The BBC today published People and Programmes, an 18 month review of its programming output, which sets out in detail the kinds of programmes the BBC will make and why. There were three main findings as a result of the research:

  • Most people value the BBC’s programmes and services; however the younger, less well off and those living further from London feel that the BBC should do more to reflect their lives.
  • Drama and entertainment remain a high priority for all audiences, but there are key programme areas which the BBC needs to develop to match the audiences’ aspirations: – an increasing appetite for knowledge and new skills – a revolution in leisure activity and corresponding programmes – regional identities are strengthening, demanding a response
  • A strong desire for the BBC to maintain its strengths; comedy, drama, sport and the coverage of national events. The programme-makers’ principal challenge, according to the review, is to meet the needs of those who feel neglected by BBC programmes, and to keep faith with loyal viewers and listeners. The review has already influenced the BBC’s output, with Radio 5 Live and Here and Now shaped by it.
