BBC to launch kid’s iPlayer

BBC's IPlayer The BBC has launched a children’s version of its iPlayer to allow kids to watch popular BBC shows on-demand.

CBBC’s iPlayer, which is has been designed for children aged between 6 and 12, gives kids the chance to view CBBC shows such as Blue Peter and MI High in a child-friendly environment, according to the corporation.

Children will be able to access the BBC’s video-on-demand service via the CBBC website and watch a selection of programmes for up to one week after broadcast.

In addition, the BBC plans to make some series available for up to 13 weeks.

The service, which has restricted access to non-children’s programming, will feature more visuals and easier navigation than the BBC’s iPlayer.

CBBC’s iPlayer will roll-out with an on-air marketing campaign in February, before the second stage is released later in 2009, which will be focused on a shared online experience that is operated by parents for children under six years old.

Richard Deverell, controller of BBC Children’s, said: “The iPlayer for CBBC is central to fulfilling our ambitions for CBBC, as it enables us to provide programmes for children whenever they want to see them, not just when we choose to schedule them.

“Children already live in the fully interactive and on-demand world and this important launch means CBBC can be there for them,” he added.
