BSkyB Outlines Plans To Gain £50 More Revenue Per Customer Each Year

BSkyB is aiming to gain an additional £50 per customer each year as a result of its interactive TV services, according to CEO Richard Freudenstein. Speaking at the FT New Media and Broadcasting conference yesterday, he said that in addition to existing interactive services on news and sports channels, new services such as SMS messaging, email and interactive advertising were planned for later in 2001.

Last month BSkyB announced that its subscriber numbers had topped 5 million (see BSkyB Hits Digital Target But Losses Grow), with 94% either converted to or initially signed on to digital services. This means that if the £50 per customer aim is met, the company could see well over £200m in extra revenue per year.

Sky has already seen a boost to its revenue stream, since the well-received launch of interactive gambling services (see BSkyB Announces Launch Of Sky Text), which saw 15,000 accounts opened within three weeks and £33m in revenue from betting reported in February.
