BSkyB Plans New Children’s Channel

BSkyB has plans to launch a new children’s channel in the Autumn, in conjunction with Nickelodeon, one of the largest producers of children’s television programming in the world.

An announcement that the channel is to begin transmission in October was made yesterday by Sam Chisholm, chief executive of BSkyB who says: “Nickelodeon has unique skills in understanding how to communicate with and entertain children, which makes it arguably the best channel of its kind in the world. It’s a formula for a very successful business”.

The channel will be managed as an independent business and will be Nickelodeon’s first venture in the UK. The US company is a registered trade- mark of MTV networks, a division of Viacom.

The new channel will be included in BSkyB’s future plans to sell ‘channel packages’ to subscribers at a monthly rate (Newsline 28/9).
