BT To Launch Own “Mass Market” Internet Service

BT has announced plans to launch its own mass market, dial-up Internet service at the end of March. The service, called BT Internet, will be aimed at residential and small business customers, and will compete with existing providers such as Demon Internet and Unipalm Pipex.

There will be a one-off charge of £20, then a flat fee of £15 per month for unlimited use. The BT services will include a full range of services, at a local telephone rate.

Rupert Gavin, Director of Multimedia Services, BT, said, “Today it is estimated that more than 30 million people “surf” the Net, but if growth is to continue at the current rate of 10% each month, some of the complexity needs to be removed. We intend to rewrite the old Internet rule book and create a simpler and more accessible service.”
