Yesterday Channel 4 and the Independent newspaper launched a new project called Power and the People, designed to bridge the gap between politicians and the electorate.
The project aims to improve the current system of opinion polling, by introducing “deliberative polling”. This is whereby a national representative sample of voters study a particular issue before answering questions.
Channel 4 and the Independent will be organising the first such exercise in deliberative polling, and the event will be filmed by Granada Televisionfor transmission on Channel 4 and full reports will appear in the Independent.
The first project will take place in Spring 1994, and there are plans to repeat the event at the next General Election.
Deliberative Polling is the idea of American political scientist James Fishkin.
