Cable Companies Snatch Cricket World Cup
A consortium of UK cable operators, CPP”1″ has won the broadcasting rights to the 1996 World Cricket Cup from the worldwide rights owner, WorldTel Inc.
The companies involved in the consortium are Comcast, Nynex, Southwestern Bell Tele-Communications Inc. and US West. CPP owns Wire TV, a UK sports and lifestyle cable channel.
The 1996 Cricket World Cup will be held in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka during February and March 1996. The matches will be relayed live via satellite to the UK, and broadcast exclusively on cable. CPP”1″ has also acquired all advertising, radio and video rights.
Adam Singer, Chairman of the CPP”1″ Board commented, “The acquisition of these rights by CPP”1″ is an enormous coup for cable television and underscores the confidence in cable’s continued growth in the UK.”
