Capital Signs Three Year Deal With Charlton Athletic FC

Capital Radio has forged yet another link between the media and football by signing a three year contract with Charlton Athletic FC for local radio rights, worth a six figure sum for each season. This is the first such deal to be announced by a London Premiership team since the clubs voted to negotiate separately at the end of the current Capital contract.

Andria Vidler, newly appointed Capital Radio managing director, said, “Sport has always been important to our listeners and will be given greater focus on our stations in the future.”

The agreement gives the company sole rights to broadcast match commentaries on Capital 95.8 FM, Capital Gold London and XFM. A reporter from Capital is to cover all club activities, match commentaries and interviews will also be carried on Charlton’s website and joint promotional initiatives are being planned.

The news comes as rival London commercial radio station Heart 106.2 FM is about to launch the second stage of a £2m strategic marketing campaign, involving a new series of posters to appear on 48 sheet, 96 sheet, Underground and 48 sheet rollervision sites across the capital. The last set of RAJAR figures saw many London stations lose year on year in terms of weekly reach (see Capital Still On Top As AM Declines Across London), while overall commercial stations lost out to BBC stations in terms of listening share.
