Capital’s Corlett To Head Up Hit 40 UK

Four of the UK’s largest radio groups have announced the appointment of Rob Corlett, product director of Capital Radio’s commercial team, as the new managing director of the Hit 40 UK.

Corlett, who brings over ten years’ experience to the newly created role, will work to build the syndicated radio brand into a multi-media music platform. He will be responsible for developing the format, which is currently broadcast across 93 commercial radio stations, to create additional revenue streams and national marketing opportunities.

Commenting on the appointment, David Mansfield, chief executive of Capital Radio, said: “This role requires not only strong commercial radio sector credentials, but also an understanding of how radio can interact with other media and technologies to create additional revenue streams.”

Capital Radio, GWR, Chrysalis and Scottish Radio Holdings share ownership of the Hit 40 UK, which was developed to replace the Pepsi Chart earlier this year. Woolworths was recently secured as the multimillion pound sponsor of the networked radio brand, in what is thought to be the biggest sponsorship deal in British radio history (see Woolworths Signed As New Chart Show Sponsor).

In other radio news, Chrysalis has announced its intention to launch its first radio station in Scotland, by bidding for the new local FM licence in Glasgow.

The radio group plans to launch its adult rock brand for 40 to 59 year-olds, The Arrow, on the FM frequency, in what would be the first of its digital formats to be translated into an analogue station.

The Arrow is currently available on digital radio in London and in the four regional transmission areas of the MXR digital multiplex, which cover South Wales and the West, the North-West, the North-East, the West Midlands and Yorkshire.

It is expected that Chrysalis will face tough competition for the licence, which is due to be awarded by the Radio Authority this spring. Scottish Media Group has already announced its intention to bid for the licence (see NewsLine) and a number of other radio groups including Scottish Radio Holdings, Emap and Absolute Radio are also understood to be interested.

Earlier this month it was revealed that the Government is proposing the launch of 32 new FM radio stations, which could provide services to a number of key cities over the next few years (see Raft Of New FM Radio Licences Proposed).
