Carter Set For Chief Executive Role at Ofcom

As expected, Stephen Carter, ex-managing director of cable company NTL, is to be named chief executive of the new communications super regulator Ofcom.

Although Ofcom have refused to comment on the appointment, an official announcement from chairman Lord Currie is expected in the next few days.

Commentators have suggested that the leadership battle was a two horse race, in which Carter narrowly triumphed over Patricia Hodgson, the chief executive of the independent television commission. Carter’s name had also been in the frame for executive positions at Channel Five, Trinity Mirror and Emap.

The appointment will see Carter working alongside Lord Currie who recently announced that that the rules governing television advertising are likely to be relaxed later this year (see Ofcom Likely To Relax Broadcast Advertising Rules).
