69% of the population aged 7 and over are now cinemagoers, according to the latest CAVIAR survey released this week. This is an increase of 4 million people year-on-year. The proportion of people visiting the cinema at least once a month is now 14%, compared with 11% in the last survey.

The top film of the year, Jurassic Park, achieved 14.2 million viewers and was popular among all ages. Cinema going is most popular among the 18-24 age group, Bram Stoker’s Dracula achieved the highest profile among this audience, with 44% of the film’s audience falling into the 18-24 category. The most popular films for the 35+ group were Sommersby and Much Ado About Nothing, the latter also attracted a high ABC1 profile, of 83%. The Crying Game was the film most seen from an art house release list and was popular among 25-34 year olds.

24 films were seen by over 2 million cinemagoers in 1993, compared with 21 films in 1992 and 14 in 1990.
