Channel 4 Radio will become the first radio station to be based in the virtual society of online phenomenon Second Life.
The move will give the fledgling station, channel4radio.com (see C4 Makes History With Radio Launch), access to the 1.2 million members of the online population, which continues to grow each month.
Channel 4 Radio will also play a part in the new interactive community by providing its own dedicated Second Life radio show reporting on the day-to-day developments and representing the first community voice for Second Life. Channel 4 Radio will also be accessible via Virtuallife.tv, Second Life’s internal broadcast network.
“Since our launch in June this year, Channel 4 Radio has been dedicated to kick-starting a groundbreaking approach to radio,” said Nathalie Schwarz, Channel 4’s director of radio. “We want to reach new audiences in different ways and put listener interaction at the heart of everything we do.
“Being the first radio station to launch in Second Life enables us to bring our range of programmes to new audiences who are interested in interactive content. Radio might be the oldest broadcast medium in the world, but technology opens up massive new opportunities for the future and Channel 4 Radio will not shy away from breaking new ground.”
Justin Bovington, CEO of Rivers Run Red, Second Life’s UK developer, added: “We’re excited to be working with Channel 4 Radio, the match is perfect. Second Life’s entire population will be able to access and immerse themselves, experiencing radio in a very different way.”
