Michael Heseltine has invited all interested parties to comment by March 3 on whether he should give consent to a take-over of the Independent and Independent on Sunday without any enquiry by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.
The MGN consortium has asked for the consent to be granted under a section of the Fair Trading Act which allows a paper to be transferred if it is not economic and where the case is urgent.
According to Raymond Snoddy in today’s FT the MGN is preparing to increase its bid for Newspaper Publishing. Discussions have been taking place this week and are expected to continue over the weekend.
