All three major party leaders will take part in a single show to be broadcast across the Commercial Radio network in the run up to the forthcoming General Election, making broadcasting history.

On the last Sunday of the election campaign, May 1 2005, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Conservative Party Leader Michael Howard and Liberal Democrat Leader Charles Kennedy, will take part in a 90 minute show,UK Leaders Live, on more than 150 stations across the country.

In an attempt to win the public’s vote, each leader will take questions from voters at commercial stations around the country. In addition a number of representatives from special interest groups will be live in the studio, offering their own contributions.

Commenting on the show, Mark Flanagan, executive producer of UK Leaders Live said: “We want to make this a truly engaging and interactive experience for our listeners. I’m delighted that, once again, Commercial Radio has been able to come together to make this event happen.”

UK Leaders Live will be hosted by radio and TV presenters Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Margherita Taylor, and broadcast between 10.00am and 11.30am from a central London studio.

This latest initiative from the UK’s Commercial Radio industry follows the phenomenal success of January’s UK Radio Aid fundraising broadcast, which raised over £3.3 million for the Tsunami fund (see Radio Aid On Course To Raise £4 Million).

The 12 hour charity marathon saw over 280 radio stations replacing their usual programmes with a nationally syndicated broadcast, attracting the UK’s biggest ever radio audience for a single show, with over 27 million listeners tuning-in.
