Condé Nast Finds New GQ Editor

Condé Nast has appointed Dylan Jones as the new editor of its men’s lifestyle magazine, GQ. Jones joins GQ from a recent post as editor-at-large for the Sunday Times. He was previously group editor at Wagadon, publishers of Arena, The Face and Frank.

Condé Nast has been searching for someone to head GQ since its last editor, James Brown, resigned after producing the March issue of the magazine which cited the Nazis and Field Marshall Rommel as amongst the most stylish men of the 20th Century. The article received complaints from Jewish groups and the Anti-Nazi League, who were disgusted that the style magazine should use the Nazis as icons (see GQ Editor Resigns After ‘Stylish Nazi’ Feature).

Of GQ, Dylan Jones says: “As a brand it covers all bases. My job is to make the brand even stronger.” Nicholas Coleridge, managing director of Condé Nast, adds: “I’ve wanted Dylan in the company for a long time… He’s spot-on for GQ.”

In the July-December 1998 ABC figures, GQ reported a circulation of 132,185, a 2.2% increase on the same audit period a year earlier. FHM and Loaded, the two biggest men’s mags, sell 751,000 copies and 457,000 copies per issue respectively.
