Emap Launches New Mini Version Of Q Magazine

Emap’s flagship music title Q is launching a special mini-magazine and compilation CD for sale in Virgin Megastores.

The mini-magazine, entitled Q Sounds, will have a cover price of £3.99 and will feature a CD of sampler showcases from a variety of current album releases. The spin-off title will contain 64 pages of reviews, interviews and money off vouchers.

It signals the formal launch of Emap Performance rock platform’s commercial brand development unit, which is headed up by Maddy Ballantyne, former publishing director of rock titles Q, Mojo and Kerrang!

The brand extension follows a similar initiative from music stablemate Mojo, which recently launched a range of CD’s with Sony music. Emap is looking to leverage the kudos of its music brands and Emap Advertising is identifying suitable commercial partners to develop more bespoke, music orientated products.

Commenting on the initiative, Maddy Ballantyne, head of the commercial brand development unit at Emap, said: “We are offering credible and effective opportunities to harness the value in our brands for mutual advantage. Q Sounds is a fantastic example of how we are in the business of joint ventures as opposed to straight media sales.”

Dave Henderson, managing director of Emap Performance rock platforms, added: “We’ve had fantastic success with one-off special projects. With so many companies now recognising the importance of music in the lives of their consumers, Maddy is actively looking for partners to get involved with some great new projects.”

The latest ABC circulation results for the six months ending June 2003 brought good news forQ magazine, which experienced an impressive 7.2% year on year increase in circulation to 172,557. The Q brand is becoming increasingly attractive to advertisers and a radio version of the magazine recently launched on Freeview (see Emap Rolls Out New Digital Radio Stations On Freeview).
