Express To Make 220 Redundancies

Express Newspapers has announced it is to make around 220 redundancies this year, costing £7.7m. In a statement, the Express says that the internal reorganisation has come about as a result of the “radidly changing media environment”. The cost of the redundancies it hopes will be recouped within a year by a reduction in operating expenses.

Express Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Express, Sunday Express and Daily Star, has suffered most as a result of the recent price war; since September 1993 the Sunday Express has dropped around 300,000 copies per day; the Daily Express has lost around 165,000 copies since then, and the Star has lost 52,000 copies. Recent rises in newsprint costs seem to have brought an end to the price war, with cover price increases announced by News International and Express’ main rivals, Associated. The Express however, has yet to follow.
