Facebook’s display ad revenues will total $3.8 billion this year – up 104% from 2010, according to a recent eMarketer forecast. By comparison, Yahoo!, AOL, and MSN’s display ad sales – not including search – were modestly up year on year, with growth of between 5% and 15%.

Facebook has catapulted to number one in display ads market share at 17.7%, beating Yahoo (13.1%), Google (9.3%), AOL (4.9%), and MSN (4.2%).

Five weeks ago, Yahoo!, AOL, and MSN struck a partnership for major display platform competitors, pooling together their unsold inventory in a deal aimed to increase margins, secure higher prices for remnant ads and augment the reach available to agencies and advertisers.

Yesterday, Bloomberg also reported that Facebook plans to launch mobile ads by the end of March. Google is currently leading mobile display in terms of market share, at 24%.

Following Facebook’s break-through year with display advertising, the industry will be watching to see whether it can make a similar impact in mobile advertising next year.
