Future Boosts Technology Portfolio With Laptop Magazine

Specialist magazine company Future Publishing has announced the acquisition of What Laptop magazine from rival Crimson Publishing, boosting its portfolio of technology titles in a deal worth £650,000.

The title caters for the portable computer market, providing readers with purchasing advice on the latest in pocket organiser and PC technology. Launched in September 1999, the magazine has quickly established itself as sector leader with a circulation of just over 25,000.

The acquisition will see What Laptop accompany a range of technology titles published by Future’s Technology Group, including PC Plus, PC Format, T3 and Microsoft Windows XP: The Official Magazine.

Commenting on the purchase, Dom Beaven, publishing director of Future’s Technology Group said: “We’re delighted to be bringing What Laptop into the UK’s biggest selling technology magazine portfolio here at Future. The team have done a great job with the magazine since its launch and have maintained sector leadership throughout that time. It’s a great magazine and fits well within the portfolio as an important part of our growth strategy.”

The first issue to be published by Future will be the February 2005 issue, hitting newsstands in January 2005. Future has no major changes planned for the title’s editorial content, although the publisher’s strong presence and good advertiser relationships are sure to boost sales further.

The title, with a cover price of £3.99, notched up a turnover of £0.8m for the year ended 30 Sept 2004, with profit reaching £0.2m. Future recently appointed ABC to carry out circulation audits for all of its 50 magazine titles, spanning the technology, games and entertainment sectors. ABC claimed the move recognises that circulation auditing is an area of speciality in its own right (see Future Publishing Hands Auditing Business To ABC).
