Guardian Unlimited Secures San Miguel Sponsorship

Guardian Unlimited is increasing its bid for advertising revenue with its most ambitious sponsorship programme to date.

The site has secured a four-month deal with beer brand San Miguel, which includes the creation of a bespoke interactive microsite with three channels of content updated by Guardian Unlimited’s team of journalists.

The San Miguel microsite, which includes Spanish travel, sport and cultural information, will be accessible via branded banners and buttons that will appear throughout the Guardian Unlimited Network. The online advertising campaign will be updated monthly to reflect the changing editorial content of the microsite, which will also be promoted via the Guardian’s email services.

Commenting on the deal, Adam Freeman head of commercial development at Guardian Unlimited said: “This is an innovative and creative sponsorship deal, which highlights the integrated and comprehensive work we can offer our clients.”

Chris Platt, account manager at m digital, which devised the strategy for the campaign, added: “Guardian Unlimited seemed a natural choice for this project due to a perfect fit for the target audience of San Miguel.”

The Guardian Media Group recently announced a fall in profits for the year to March but claimed that the advertising market is showing signs of recovery. Pre-tax profits at GMG totalled £9.8 million in the first three months of 2002, down from £67 million for the same period last year (see GMG Reports Fall In Profits).
