Half of UK unfamiliar with YouView brand

YouViewAdvanced Television has published research from connected technology company Twonky that shows 51% of the UK prefer to watch catch-up services on a TV, over second screen devices like smartphones and tablets.

The survey also revealed that 19% of people consider convenience more important than screen size.

YouView, the joint venture between the major broadcasters, BT and TalkTalk launched late last year amongst plenty of hype but it would seem news of the venture still needs to reach a higher awareness in the market.

Despite the excess of promotion and media coverage surrounding the hybrid digital TV box, 49% of those surveyed had not even heard of the service.

Consumers also have a range of concerns about the quality of catch-up services, including slow speeds causing excessive buffering (46%), frequent advertising breaks (26%) and lower quality video content than on a TV (17%), Advanced Television reports.

Jerome Rota, senior vice president of consumer products and services at Twonky parent company PacketVideo, said of the results: “After such a focus on mobility in 2012, we were slightly surprised by the results of this research but not entirely shocked. Although entertainment on the go is a convenient development, larger screens still provide the best user viewing experience.

“Consuming media on a large screen allows for a better quality of viewing and a more social experience. The internet is full of high quality of content with the added benefit of anytime viewing. That, combined with these findings, suggests that the connected home is the preferred solution for the perfect entertainment environment.”
