IPC Poaches Women’s Advertising Boss From Emap

IPC Advertising has poached Paul Bates, one of Emap Esprit’s high-profile advertising directors, to head the management team of its women’s weekly division, IPC Connect.

The move, which sees Bates, previously advertising director of Emap’s third biggest-selling magazine, Yours, taking the role of advertising manager with IPC Core Connect. The new role gives Bates responsibility for some of IPC’s best known brands, including Woman, Woman’s Own, Chat and Woman’s Weekly.

Bates brings a wealth of publishing experience to IPC, having joined Emap seven years ago, starting in classified advertising on the company’s Practical Photography magazine. After joining Emap Esprit when it launched in May 2000, Bates led his team to win the company’s Sales Team of the Year Award for the last two years.

Commenting on his appointment, Bates said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead, together with the weekly environment. I feel the Core Connect group is a really strong group and I am looking forward to growing the business further and developing what already looks to be an excellent team.”

Also joining IPC Core Connect are Samantha Austen, senior sales executive for Core Connect, who becomes advertising manager for Now, and Andrew Miller, also a senior sales executive for Core Connect who is promoted to advertising manager of the tx/Connect Solutions team. Miller will be responsible for developing advertising opportunities across the Connect and IPC tx (TV listings) portfolios.

All three new appointments will report directly to IPC Connect advertisement director, Kate MacKenzie. She said: “I am delighted to be making these appointments. Paul will be joining us at a really exciting time for our brands. His experience will help drive the business to the next level.”

She added: “Andrew and Sam are both hugely talented, with exceptional track records in our industry. They will be leading very committed, strong teams and I am sure they will both shine in their new roles.”

Earlier this month IPC announced the creation of its first electronic title. Dubbed Downloaded, the title is a digital spin-off of Web User magazine and is distributed electronically for £1.20 per issue plus VAT (see IPC’s Web User Launches Digital Spin-Off Magazine).
