Strike when the iron is hot, advises Suzie Coen from Mediatel Jobs’ partner Jobbio.

You’re good at your job, you may even be great at it. You’re an integral member of the team as well as an advocate for the wider business. Why wouldn’t you feel you’re in an ideal position to ask for more money at work and to get it? And as inflation continues to rise and you’re paying more each month for basic essentials, can you really affordnot to try your luck for a raise right now?

Undoubtedly, it’s been a rocky few years for the UK media industry which has faced questions of public trust, commercial viability and relevance amongst younger audiences. While it is better than it has been in the past, trust in advertising remains low: an Ipsos Mori poll in October 2020 found just 13% of UK adults trusted advertising executives to be truthful, compared with 16% in the case of government ministers.

Media and agency employees are burnt out by client demands, not to mention relentless schedules and overwork. The requirement to produce work at speed for multiple platforms has made many media jobs a very delicate balancing act.

So strike when the iron is hot. If ever there was a good time to go ask for that raise, it’s almost certainly now. Here’s a blueprint for how to do it and what to do if the response is no.

Know your worth

Remind yourself and your boss of the value you bring to the table such as boosting productivity, increasing revenue and delivering on goals ahead of time.

Research the market

Research the market place, review salary surveys, speak to recruiters and find out what others in your position are actually earning.

Perfect your timing

Take advantage of ‘high-leverage’ moments — successes and victories you’ve delivered — to share your compensation goals with your manager.

Expect some resistance and be prepared to fight your corner. But don’t treat this like it’s your only option. If your employer isn’t willing to budge, there is good news. Most people receive a salary increase of anywhere between 10-20% when they change jobs. Now is a great time to reach for something better.
