ITV has announced that after discussions with Buckingham Palace it has been agreed that the Queen’s Christmas broadcasts in 1997 and 1998 will be produced and distributed by ITN. This effectively ends the BBC’s exclusive rights to broadcast the message.
Many believe that the snub to the BBC is a result of the Panorama interview with the Princess of Wales. The BBC denies this saying that the production of the Queen’s broadcast was being reviewed before the Panorama programme was screened. The BBC will produce the Christmas broadcast in 1999 and 2000.
